How to Adjust Shipping Rates and Apply Free Shipping for Minimum Orders

  1. 1. Identify Distributor Shipping Charges

    • Access the backend of your website and navigate to the product feed section in the Cockpit plugin. This is where you'll see a list of your distributors and the shipping rates they charge, such as Sport South, Lipseys, and Chattanooga. Note down the shipping costs associated with each distributor.

  2. 2. Set a Uniform Shipping Rate (or different rates if desired)

    • Decide on a flat shipping rate that covers the costs charged by your distributors. To keep it simple and avoid too much cost to your customer's shipping, you can set this rate slightly above the highest distributor shipping fee. For example, if your distributors charge between $9.95 and $14.95, setting a flat shipping rate of $15 is reasonable.

  3. 3. Configure Shipping in WooCommerce

    • Go to the WooCommerce settings in your dashboard and select the shipping tab.
    • Find the 'Zone Name' that applies (e.g., United States) and click 'Edit' next to the flat rate shipping method.
    • Ensure the shipping method is not taxed by checking the appropriate option.

  4. 4. Adjust Flat Rate Shipping Costs

    • In the shipping method settings, set your default flat rate shipping cost to your chosen rate ($15 in our example). This will apply to all products unless specified otherwise.
    • If you wish to add a markup for shipping, you can do so by adjusting the default cost. However, this guide recommends keeping shipping costs as low as possible to encourage sales.

  5. 5. Customize Shipping Rates for Different Categories

    • If you need different shipping rates for different types of products (e.g., firearms vs. accessories), you can create separate shipping methods for each category and set individual rates accordingly.

  6. 6. Implement Free Shipping for Large Orders (if desired)

    • Still in the shipping settings, add a free shipping method and set it to activate for orders over a specific amount. For example, you might offer free shipping on orders over $1,000.
    • Adjust the minimum order amount as needed to fit your business model.

  7. 7. Finalize and Save Your Settings

    • Once you've configured all shipping rates and conditions, make sure to save your settings. This will ensure that your shipping rates are updated on your site.

  8. 8. Review and Test

    • After saving, it's important to review your shipping settings and conduct test transactions to ensure everything works as intended. This helps prevent any unexpected issues for your customers.

By following these steps, you can effectively adjust shipping rates to reflect distributor charges and incentivize larger orders with free shipping options. Remember, the goal is to offer transparent shipping costs to your customers, encouraging more sales through clear, fair shipping policies.
